This is the weekend each May that Boyne City, Michigan fills with hundreds of mushroom lovers from around the country. They come seeking that elusive delicacy-the marvelous morel. Found in nearby woods and clearings, morels are favored by those who know their ‘shrooms. Boyne City has hosted the National Morel Mushroom Festival for 55 years. The weekend includes mushroom hunting seminars, tours, contests, food tastings, crafts, entertainment and more.
This same weekend there is also a Morel Mushroom Festival in Muscoda, Wisconsin, which claims to be “Morel Mushroom Capital”. The event celebrates the end of the mushroom’s two-week peak period. They have mushrooms served up fried, or you ready for purchase to take home and enjoy later. Saturday night offers a fireman’s annual steak feed followed by fireworks. Sunday parade at 2pm. Also includes a craft fair, flea market, car show, carnival and much more.
As I look at these mushroom celebrations a fundamental question is how one knows whether a mushroom is the real deal or not.
