As we start to gear up with our new site, we are re-visiting some especially meaningful features we are partial to.
This one is about Cops and Doughnuts, a small bake shop in Claire, Michigan that has become a feel-good story to millions far beyond town.
The Clare City Bakery had been a fixture in the community, in constant operation since 1896. This foundation business was within weeks of closing when the members of the Clare Police Department came to the rescue. All of them. That’s right, all nine members of the local police department, loyal customers of the bakery, banded together to save this historic business. The officers pooled their money together, purchased the struggling small business and renamed it Cops & Doughnuts.
Since then the business has thrived, gained national acclaim and again boasts handmade confections of all types, as it did in its heyday.
We hope that our own podcast will soon be available again, but in the meantime check out this video (courtesy Huffington Post and AOL) that describes Cops and Doughnuts’ inspiring story.
