Many of Montreal’s downtown landmarks can boast of historical or architectural significance.

But while thousands of people pass these buildings every day — or even work in them — few are aware of their role in the city’s development.

Heritage Montreal is hoping to change that with At the Heart of the City, a series of three walking tours designed to tell the story of Montreal’s coming of age through its buildings and their architecture. Co-sponsored by real estate investment firm Ivanhoé Cambridge, the guided tours encompass 145 years of local history, from the founding of Dominion (now Dorchester) Square to the present day.
