At first glance, they are both admirable goals and non-exclusive of one another.

But the Côte-des-Neiges Rd. business section in Montreal finds itself in debate.

At the calling of some store owners and residents who have complained for years about a proliferation of signs they describe as either cheap, rundown or distasteful, Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce is proposing a new bylaw that would restrict the types of signage allowed on a section of Côte-des-Neiges Rd. and they hope will resurrect some of its old-world charm.

While several merchants agreed some signs are an eyesore, many argued their signs mounted on poles are a necessity.
