Richard D. Trentlage died the other day at age 87. His name was little known to most of us. Today he is being remembered as writer of the now famous Oscar Mayer weiner jingle.

But has creativity stretched beyond those famous lyrics “Oh, I wish I were an Oscar Mayer wiener”.

He also was the creator of other memorable melodies and tag lines , including: “McDonald’s is your kind of place”; “Wow! It sure doesn’t taste like tomato juice,” for V8; and one of my old favorites (that I forgotten about)  “Buckle up for safety, buckle up!” for a National Safety Council promotion for using seatbelts.

Yes, Noel Coward, Irving Berlin, Paul McCartney and Bruce Springstein are important. But so was Richard D. Trentlage

We miss the optimism that he tapped into. Today I eat fewer hot dogs but still embrace his melody and the sentiments he sought to capture is he helped sell product and ideas:

“…if I were an Oscar Mayer wiener/Everyone would be in love with me”.
